The MPK61 is a MIDI controller that sends MIDI values over USB for plug-and-play performance with Mac and PC. Ableton Live Lite enables musicians to spontaneously compose, record, remix, improvise, and edit musical ideas in a seamless audio/MIDI environment. The MPK61 comes with Ableton Live Lite Akai Edition software, one of the most popular and powerful performance and production programs worldwide. Like its 25, 49 and fully weighted 88-key siblings - the MPK25, MPK49 and MPK88, respectively, the MPK61 empowers musicians to create and manipulate melodic, harmonic and rhythmic content and manipulate quickly with its arpeggiator, MPC Swing and MPC Note Repeat technologies. The MPK61 retains the key split features from the MPK88, enabling the performer to divide the keyboard into two zones for performing with two different programs at once. The MPK61's size is ideal for performers who need a larger range than the original 49-key MPK49 offers, but also prefer the lighter weight and associated portability of a semi-weighted keyboard. Producers, performers and DJs will appreciate the MPK61's mix of 61 semi-weighted keys with aftertouch, 16 MPC pads with velocity and pressure sensitivity, 72 assignable Q-Link, MPC Note Repeat, MPC Swing and an arpeggiator. Each MPK controller combines a piano-style keybed with a bank of genuine Akai Professional MPC pads, assignable Q-Link controllers and some of the technologies from the icon MPC. Next, assign your MIDI inputs and outputs under MIDI Setup. The name of Track 1 will change to “Electro Kick.” If you don’t have a MIDI keyboard connected, go to Edit/Show Virtual MIDI Keyboard. Press a key on the virtual keyboard with your mouse to test. You can also use your computer keyboard to play the virtual keys by clicking on the Keys button to the far left of the virtual keyboard and selecting “QWERTY.” Below the piano keys you will see which QWERTY key plays which note you can reassign which note is played by double-clicking in the white note boxes and typing in new notes. In the Transport window, click the white Record circle icon it will turn red and the metronome will give you a four-bar count-off before recording. Hit the C2 key in time with the metronome. A window will then come up prompting you to name this track. Now you will see a colored bar in the track 1 section between your loop locators. Hit the Rewind button in the transport bar and hit Play or your spacebar to listen.

If not, go to Edit/Undo Recording and try again. MuLab utilizes more of a non-linear arranging style including Drum-Machine type grid sequencing, drag and drop effects, and a modular mapping system for routing effects and submixes by simply drawing lines. Next, let’s add additional percussion, such as snare. MuTools MuLab is a modern DAW designed to break out of the old school music production mold. Click on to Rack 2 in the bottom of the window, click in the first slot, and go to Synths/MuTools/ROM/Percussion/Drumset. You can play your loop while you test the new sounds. Pick a snare sound or other percussion instrument you want and play it in time with your loop.
